If you don’t have a video as outlined above, now is the time to prepare one.
Your video must not be more than 8 minutes and no less than 6 minutes.
Your video must be impressive therefore, it should be of good quality and presentable for the world to see.
Videos can be captured and produced with a Mobile Phone Camera but must be of good quality. No fuzzy, grainy, poorly-shot footage please.
Usually a mobile Phone Camera won’t match the capabilities of a high-end camera, so if you have a high-end camera, please use it. However, it is recommended that you get someone with experience producing this type of video to shoot your video or if possible, hire a professional to produce it
Creating a soccer highlights video requires technical skills and an eye for editing.
Provide detailed information along with your video. The first frame of the video should include your name, age, date of birth, jersey number and position. You can also add playing history, achievements and sport-specific measurements such as height, weight, etc.
Coaches and scouts want to know how players respond in a game, so they would prefer to see game footage. They want to see how players see the field—they need to judge their decision-making and skills. The best way to achieve this, if it’s not possible to see the players in person, is by the player showing their best game footage in their video highlights.
Coaches want to see a simple highlight video that gets to the point
Many athletes make highlight videos with the wrong audience in mind. While a “cool” video with catchy music is more likely to get views on YouTube and coaches need a simple video that gets right to the point. It would be to your advantage to make a “cool” video with catchy music to get views on YouTube. Just don’t lose track of the purpose. While there is definitely a skill to putting together clips for a highlight video, below are a few things to keep in mind.
Preparing an impressive video and obtaining video footage requires the following:
Find the right angle to shoot the video
Finding the right angle and keeping the camera steady are the two most important things you can do. Here are some pointers on how to get the best shots:
Showcase your best clips first. Don’t save the best stuff for last. Put it up front, starting out strong to capture the attention of the viewing coaches and public.
First Impressions — within the first 30 seconds to a minute, coaches can decide what they think of the player. If they are not impressed right away, they will discontinue watching.
So pick opening plays or skills that shows your game and will leave an impression. Put your most impressive clips in the first 2-3 minutes of the video.
Once the footage is shot, the next step is to edit it down to the best 6-8 minutes, which includes 15–20 game clips for field players. If you would like to have a professional edit your video for you, you can search FIVERR on the web for video editing. From there, make sure to add in other key skills that you believe the coaches/scouts may want to see. The goal is to get the coaches/scouts hooked in the first 30 seconds, so they continue watching your video to see the depth of your skill-set and ability.
Coaches rarely view to the end of even the most impressive highlight videos. They will typically watch a good video for four to five minutes therefore, a limit of eight minutes for a highlight video will suffice.
Remember that every touch and play doesn’t have to be perfect because it is understood that you will make mistakes and some coaches are also interested in how players adjust to imperfect situations. However, don't deliberately include clips with your mistakes in your video.
Emphasize only on your three best qualities in your video.
This will give you structure and a foundation for your video. Make your video position-specific and in sections. For instance, a forward could do a section on scoring goals, making assists, and movement off the ball. A goalkeeper could do a section for saves, one for distribution, and another on goal kicks.
Show 3 seconds before and after the “moment”. If you are showing an assist, include footage 3 seconds before and 3 seconds after the assist to show the entire play.
Always identify yourself in every clip. It’s very difficult to read jersey #’s on videos so that makes it hard for a coach to identify who the player is. It’s imperative to have an arrow, light, or circle, something to indicate who the coach should be watching at the start of every clip in the video.
Keep the video short and sweet— no less than 4 minutes and no more than 8 minutes, to retain the viewer’s attention. We also want coaches to maximize their time, so they can view as many videos as possible.
Keep it simple
Be mindful, some coaches and scouts are not so interested in an intro, music or special editing effects however, there are those who like seeing when a player adds a 5-10 second intro of them talking/introducing the video. This puts a face/personality to the player, that’s a nice personal touch.
Just make sure the music is tasteful and try to stay middle of the road on this one because you don’t want a coach to not watch your (entire) video because of your music choice!
Here are some other tips for making a top-notch video:
It is recommended goalkeepers produce a video with a combination of match footage and skills footage.
Field Players
You can submit more than one video; after submitting your first video, if you believe your performance has improved, especially if you were continuously and diligently training/working on your improvement and would like to give a showing of your improved game and ability. Just submit another video for the assessment/acceptance process. Videos can be upgraded every six months to a year, or as you see it necessary. Your video must be impressive!
It would be a good idea to have your club coach review your highlight video before you submit it, to ensure it is properly depicting you as a player.
USA TODAY: Once college coaches have identified a recruit they are interested in, their next step is to predict how well that recruit will do at the college level. There are general ways coaches approach this, like assessing how big or fast you are, but for most recruits, their measurables alone aren’t enough.
Coaches need to see you against other college-level recruits
Many times, the biggest struggle for coaches isn’t evaluating the individual recruit, but knowing how to interpret their performance related to their competition. If you put a college-level athlete on the field against normal high school competition, they are going to dominate. Coaches really want to know how they will do against other college-level athletes. Most coaches would rather watch 10 plays of a recruit against another legitimate college recruit, than 100 plays of that recruit against normal high school competition.
Finally, the intention of a highlight video is to pique interest from the coaches. Your video must be impressive!
After you register and upload your video, you will receive an e-mail acknowledging receipt of your registration and video.
